What is AI?

This article aims to demystify the opaque nature of Artificial Intelligence for a non-technical reader. It outlines both its capabilities and limitations, while also serving as a thought-provoking philosophical discussion on how society can benefit from a better understanding of AI by recognizing its strengths and weaknesses. We begin with a historical overview, examine human nature, and consider how our most beneficial technologies have been designed to serve our purposes. We then compare this with current trends and present several philosophical questions. We emphasize that AI is not inherently dangerous; however, society —particularly technologists—needs to reevaluate their perspectives and approaches to avoid potential pitfalls. Additionally, we explain the reasons behind AI-based companies’ struggles in achieving profitability and the obstacles they face in commercialization.
